Microsoft Corporation Principal Software Development Engineer in Redmond, Washington

The Microsoft Windows & Devices (W+D) team is on a journey to deliver iconic end-to-end products across hardware, software, and services that people love and use every day. The Windows Silicon & System Integration (WSSI) team within W+D is hiring a Principal Software Development Engineer who will design and influence the diagnostics technology across the whole Windows ecosystem for cutting-edge silicon.

As a Principal Software Development Engineer, you will be involved in multiple facets of silicon development, validation, and support including prototyping new designs, validating, debugging new hardware features, SOC bring up, debugging device drivers, performance analysis, developing automated regression test suites and engaging with IHV, ISV and OEMs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement solutions that integrate with Windows and existing diagnostics frameworks.

  • Perform kernel debugging / hardware debugging (JTAG) when needed.

  • Leverage performance profiling and log analysis to understand system behavior.

  • Approach every customer engagement with a profound commitment to their success.

  • Interact with architects, hardware design teams, software and firmware teams, and systems teams for feature definition and refinement, hardware support, optimization, and debugging.

  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to find solutions that are leverageable across multiple architectures and generations.

  • Deliver clear written communication of technical designs and solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience with OS primitives, memory management, scheduling, and interrupt threading.

  • Experience developing frameworks or libraries or applications for Windows.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of professional experience designing and developing software solutions.

  • Problem solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience with GIT, PowerShell, JSON, C#, YAML.

  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and judgment in fast-paced environments.

  • Ability to quickly ramp-up on complex and unfamiliar code.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
