This position is located in the Division 3 / District 2 Clinton Resident Engineer’s office and will serve as a lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium to large highway construction projects. Monitors daily progress of projects and resolves constructability issues to maintain project schedules. Directs and schedules the work of technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manages all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from higher level engineers. May supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract construction inspectors. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary.

Demonstrate ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them to proper work methods. Will maintain project diaries on a daily basis including correspondence with contractors. Employee will perform both office and field duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans.

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.

  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.

  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.

  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments.

Additional Expectations:

Applicant must have the ability to legally to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to take notes. Good communication skills needed. Projects may last for several months or longer. May be subject to a wide range of hazards such as rough or uneven terrain and/or work in adverse weather conditions to include heat or cold. Employee will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. May be required to work nights or weekends. Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
