Uber Sr Technical Program Manager in San Francisco, California

About the Role

Uber is seeking a Technical Program Manager (TPM) to drive structure and coordination for large-scale, complex engineering initiatives across the Storage & Search Platform . This role focuses on enabling cross-team collaboration to modernize the storage stack, enhance efficiency, improve reliability, and support cloud infrastructure efforts. Your contributions will help streamline execution and ensure alignment across multiple engineering teams.

The Uber Technical Program Management (TPM) team plays a critical role in driving high-impact, org-wide initiatives and continuously improving processes to enhance the efficiency of our product and engineering organizations.

The Storage & Search Platform powers a wide range of use cases across Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Operations , supporting key business areas such as Rides, Eats, Delivery, Safety, and Maps . With Uber's data volumes experiencing exponential growth, this platform is essential to enabling the company's operations at scale. To support these mission-critical use cases, the Storage & Search Platform is engineered to be one of the most sophisticated systems in the world.

What the Candidate Will Do:

A strong TPM in this role will move fluidly from the big picture to the minutiae so that their teams can deliver strategic multi-functional technical projects. You will work with engineering managers and engineers to estimate work efforts, define milestones, and manage resources. You are a bridge and a connector for the company and will work to clarify priorities while driving teams to be highly effective and develop broad domain and technical knowledge, mentoring where needed.

TPM work also involves the following:

  • Leading all aspects of project progress, resolving dependencies, evaluating risks, and communicating status to upper management and project team members.

  • Engaging and energizing your teams to achieve goals.

  • Proactively removing obstacles to drive momentum, progress, and results.

  • Identifying communication gaps, managing issues, team concerns, and providing support to teams balancing opposing priorities.

  • Contributing to the management of the multi-functional strategic planning and business planning process, leading conversations with key team members to develop concepts for strategic initiatives, and developing those into detailed program / project plans (including roadmaps, funding planning, resource planning and hiring goals).

  • Implementing continuous improvements to the engineering organization and the program management process.

  • Share program/project process frameworks, tools, and standard methodologies that can be adopted throughout the organization.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Proven track record as a TPM, Engineering Manager, and/or Architect in a software, SaaS, or systems development environment.

  • Technical proficiency with an ability to understand technical architecture, challenges, risks, and propose alternatives.

  • Strong experience in large scale distributed systems, such as online storage and database systems(SQL and No-SQL), Search systems, and/or Data Lake ecosystems (i.e. large scale Data Analytics using object storage, YARN/Kubernetes, Spark, Presto, etc).

  • Technical degree in computer science or related field.

  • Key TPM skills such as:

  • 1) Proven cross-team and cross-org program management.

  • 2) Metrics driven: experience determining effective program KPI's and using them to measure program success and issues.

  • 3) Strong organizational skills to prioritize tasks without losing sight of the highest priority items.

  • 4) Identifying process gaps, measuring progress, and balancing engineering and product efficiency with process overhead.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a developer which includes writing, testing, and deploying code.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$180,000 per year - USD$200,000 per year. For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$180,000 per year - USD$200,000 per year. For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
