Description
Amazon is building the next generation software, hardware, and processes to run our state-of-the-art global fulfillment network that moves many millions of units of inventory, ensuring that customers get what they want when promised. We are constantly innovating in the ways we are automating and accelerating the delivery of packages which includes custom robotics, mechatronics, conveyance, supply chain optimization, machine learning, manipulation, image processing, and real-time data processing using distributed systems.
We are looking for a Senior System Development Engineer with a passion for industrial software and control systems to transform the way we integrate robotics within our global network of advanced warehouses. This position is a unique opportunity to be involved in a wide range of automation projects right from the start. You will interface with multiple internal Amazon R&D and design teams as well as the world’s leading automation strategic partners who have the technology and resources to meet Amazon’s growth needs on a global scale.
This is a role in a growing team responsible for realizing the convergence of modern software development with traditional industrial control. It is an early-stage initiative with a fast paced, highly collaborative start-up like environment inside Amazon, so be successful you need to be flexible and entrepreneurial. You are a true owner - you are hands on and you lead by example.
Key job responsibilities
Develop core machine control logic for industrial edge devices (e.g. PLCs, IPCs)
Design, simplify and continuously improve system controls architecture including machine control code, networking, electrical design and safety design
Identify and implement system optimizations
Integrate control systems with a diverse array of sensors, actuators, motors, and software services
Work closely with deployment teams to implement end-to-end solutions in the field
30% travel expected to support onsite system testing

Basic Qualifications
6+ years of systems design, software development, operations, automation, and process improvement experience
4+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
3+ years machine controls programming experience on industrial edge devices (e.g. PLCs, IPCs)
3+ years of working knowledge of software engineering best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, design patterns, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
2+ years of experience deploying and supporting industrial automation products at scale
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering
Experience with the CODESYS integrated development environment
Expert knowledge of industrial fieldbus protocols such as Profinet, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT
Experience solving problems utilizing AWS
Experience with multiple Industrial Control System platforms such as Allen Bradley, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Fanuc
Experience with Linux/Unix
Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes
Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe product features, and present technical designs
Experience influencing engineering best practices within your team
Ability to learn new technologies quickly
Experience writing technical documents
Ability to travel up to 30% and eligible for international travel

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
