Purpose of the Job

The Medical Office Specialist Program is a 9-week course of full time education which includes a total of 309 hour of instruction. A Medical Office Specialist is a person that has received training to assist the physician in diagnosing & treating clients in doctors offices. They have received specific skill instruction to perform many laboratory specimen collections. They are supervised by the physician or his designated representative, in the physician office. Many may be qualified to work outside the physician office environment such as Medical Laboratories, Dialysis Centers & Outpatient clinics.

The role of the Medical Office Specialist Instructor is to provide quality training at the Health Education Career Institute, Medical Office Specialist Training Program. During this program the student will learn basic anatomy, physiology and environmental theories that support the physician with diagnosing and treating illnesses. The student will learn the skills and be able to perform delegated tasks. Upon completion of the program, the successful student will be qualified to take the National Healthcare Association Medical Assistant Certification test.

Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct classes in accordance with established syllabi and lesson plans;

Prepare, administer and grade assignments, quizzes and tests;

Provide objective and subjective feedback regarding student performance;

Maintain records of student attendance, grades, lab, and/or homework assignments;

Advise students regarding academic matters to improve successful course completion;

Communicate pro-actively with campus administration regarding student issues;

Ensure campus and college regulations and policies are known and followed.

Maintain a healthy, secure, and safe classroom environment.

Utilize positive reinforcement as a teaching strategy;

Teach hands on phlebotomy, injections, and blood pressure.

Identify student learning methods and adjust teaching strategy accordingly;

Participate in scheduled faculty meetings and in services;

Report course preparation;

Successful instructors will be flexible , committed to teamwork, organized, and willing to help students become successful in their career goals;

The instructor will involve students in the lecture portion of instruction and laboratory setting;

The instructor will utilize available audio/visual resources to present basic anatomy & physiology, communication skills, common disease processes, and a variety of other theoretical ideas;

The instructor must be available after hours during the course for student questions;

The instructor will monitor students progress in the medical assistant program, their skills and knowledge and their employability skills;

Classes will be held Monday through Thursday 08:00 am to 5:00 pm. No weekends.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge:

Knowledge in working in close contact with a physician

Skills in:

Requires adequate manual dexterity to demonstrate delegated skills;

Ability to sit, stand, walk and assist students during lecture and classroom activities;

Obtain CPR training within 90 days of hire and maintain annually.

Qualifications:

Associate Degree (or higher) in a related field;

Experience:

1 year teaching experience;

Experience with youth ages 18 -22;

Experience with young adults ages 24-30.

2 years experience working in close contact with a physician;

1 year experience supervising other Medical Assistants;
