Nightwing Mechanical Engineer in Springfield, Virginia

Job Summary:
Nightwing is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our Springfield, VA location to add to our technology development and mission support program. The engineer will contribute to efforts by collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to develop innovative engineering solutions from concept development through mission execution and deployment. Many of these efforts require solving the client’s challenges in new or different ways that involve the application of theoretical and practical engineering to achieve success.
Job Duties:
The engineer will work closely with teams to identify and develop innovative and practical solutions. The candidate must possess a positive attitude, initiative, strong problem-solving skills, and dedication to execute the program’s development and mission support efforts. The candidate will have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of mechanical engineering disciplines to ensure the application of technical rigor and best practices throughout project lifecycles. This position includes responsibilities for understanding and developing design requirements, generating test plans, engineering analyses, and testing. The engineer will create and update designs, prepare fabrication drawings, coordinate with vendors, develop technical procedures, prepare and deliver design reviews, and contribute or lead end user training courses. Candidates must be professional, self-starters, innovative, have strong communication skills, and work well with engineers, technicians, and customer staff.
Required Qualifications:
Candidate must possess an active Top Secret security clearance
M.S. or B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Minimum two (2) years of prior relevant experience
Experience or coursework with CAD software package for mechanical design and documentation (SolidWorks preferred)
Fundamental engineering skills including mechanics of materials, statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer
Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, collaborative team environment balancing often widely different project tasks and types
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Proficient with MS Office tools including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project
Working knowledge of common hand and powered tools
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to travel to temporary assignments outside of the greater Washington DC Metropolitan area. Travel <10%.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with electro-mechanical systems, automation/robotics, and sensors
Coursework in Finite Element Analysis and Mechanics of Materials
Experience with engineering data analysis tools such as Matlab and Mathcad
Passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
Product development experience using rapid, iterative design and prototyping with frequent integration/test cycles
Experience designing for and using additive manufacturing
U.S. Citizenship status required as this position needs an active Top Secret security clearance on day one of employment.
