Connecticut State Job Bank Maintenance Mechanic I in Torrington, Connecticut
General Statement of Duties:
This is semi-skilled work in the performance of predictive, preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs of mechanical and electrical machinery and equipment. Work includes the maintenance of buildings, structures and grounds related to the Water Pollution Control Authority performing plumbing, welding, electrical and carpentry duties. Maintains appropriate record keeping as necessary including the operation and record keeping for a Preventative Maintenance Program.
Illustrative Examples of Work Performed:
- Performs work in the inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation of electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and HVAC systems.
- Assists in the repair and installation of motors, compressors, bearings, seals, valves, pumps, drive chains and belts, shear pins and all other equipment associated with the facilities.
- Welds, brazes, and solders as required in the performance of duties.
- Performs preventive maintenance such as but not limited to greasing and oil changes, painting and cleaning of all associated equipment as necessary to ensure proper operation.
- Maintains accurate maintenance records on all associated equipment.
- Assist in maintaining appropriate inventories of replacement parts and supplies.
- Maintains effective working relationships with vendors.
- Inputs equipment maintenance data into the plant database.
- Repairs small engine grounds maintenance equipment.
- Performs custodial and housekeeping tasks.
- Performs other work as assigned or as needed to ensure the most efficient maintenance of the Water Pollution Control Authority facilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and understanding of methods and practices associated with the maintenance of all equipment associated with the Water Pollution Control Facilities and the treatment and disposal of industrial and residential sewage.
- Knowledge of and ability to perform mechanical, electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, masonry repair and HVAC tasks.
- Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials used in the operation, repair and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and grounds.
- Ability to evaluate and diagnose equipment operational problems and provide effective remedies.
- Ability to read and interpret meters, charts, and graphs.
- Ability to read and interpret maps and drawings.
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to utilize computer skills to maintain accurate maintenance records.
- Ability to work effectively with public officials, employees, vendors and the general public.
Education, Experience, and Training:
Graduation from high school or vocational training school or equivalency. A minimum of three (3) years experience in the assembly, repair, and maintenance of equipment similar to that found at a Water Pollution Control Facility. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut Drivers License. Employees should make every effort to obtain Connecticut Class I Wastewater Operators license within eighteen (18) months of employment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, handle small items with fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear, ability to define colors. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds.
Work Environment:The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functi ns of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and caustic chemicals. The employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
