JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences seeks a diverse pool of candidates for an Assistant Research Professor of Metabolism. This is a nontenure-track, faculty position on a 48-week academic year appointment with 100% research responsibilities in a term contract with the opportunity and expectation for continued renewal. The position will be based in the Patterson Laboratory within the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. We seek candidates with expertise to lead research on several projects related diet, metabolism, metabolomics, and the gut microbiome. The successful candidate will develop independent research and contribute to studies with the use of mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analyses to study the impact of the gut microbiome and diet on human health and disease. This position will complement faculty research in the existing, successful Center for Molecular Toxicology and Carcinogenesis (https://www.cmtc.psu.edu/) and Penn State Cancer Institute, among others. There are opportunities for collaboration with many programs, centers, and Institutes across the College and University.

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in a relevant field (such as biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physiology, or closely related field), at least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience, a strong interest in diet, microbiomes, metabolism, and a history of productivity. Extensive experience (including sample preparation, data acquisition and analysis, and interpretation) with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is required. Expertise in using TopSpin, Chenomx, and analysis of 1D and 2D NMR spectra is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong publication record and the potential to develop a vigorous extramurally funded research program. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff, is essential.
