JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Burghardt Lab and the Plant Science Department at The Pennsylvania State University (https://psu.edu) seek a Research Technologist to establish and run a unique existing Lasar Abalation Tomography facility and to provide advanced technical expertise, safety compliance, and lab management in the Burghardt Lab to support ongoing NSF and NIFA grant-funded work. In addition to technical experience in 1) root and rhizosphere biology, 2) Lasar Ablation Tomography, and 3) project and lab management, valued traits include independence, leadership and creativity, collaboration, meticulousness, persistence, and the ability to work with a diverse team and effectively prioritize tasks. The Burghardt lab focuses on understanding legume-rhizobia-climate interactions in natural and managed landscapes (see http://lianaburghardtlab.com for additional information).

Position responsibilities include:

  • Development, Management, and Maintenance, of the Lasar Ablation Tomography (LAT) machine located in the Plant Science Department as a facility for use by the PSU scientific community and beyond Data management and stewardship of complex phenotypic and sequencing data and sample collections, ensuring lab safety compliance and performing lab management tasks, including purchasing

  • Training and supervising other lab members on plant and microbial technical skills,

  • Independently conducting and coordinating laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based experiments with plants and microbes

  • Undertaking methods development for creative, high-risk projects measuring plant-microbe interactions

  • The technologist will have opportunities to participate in data analysis, publication production (co-authorship), and other professional development activities

This is a full-time, limited-term position funded for one year from the date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding, based at the University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University in Central PA. Reappointment is available for additional years, conditional on satisfactory performance and the availability of funds. This position offers a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Questions about flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process. It includes a salary (commensurate with experience) and a competitive benefits package. The ideal start date is mid-summer 2024.

Education and Experience:

This position requires a B.A. in biology, microbiology, plant science, ecology and evolution, genetics, or a related field, plus 6 or more years of related experience, o r an equivalent combination of education and experience . Research experience can be obtained concurrently with degrees. Candidates with a Ph.D. are encouraged to apply. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $74,000.00
