Katmai Ophthalmology Technician - Laser Eye - CSS in USAF ACADEMY, Colorado

SUMMARY:

Screens and checks in patients and escorts patients to treatment areas. Shall assist with all aspects of patient care, to include performing initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, and applanation tonometry.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accurately prepares room & patient for examinations, therapeutic measures and procedures assuring all needed equipment and supplies are available prior to the start of the exam.

  • Takes, monitors, and records physiological measurements.

  • Performs medical treatment, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures per extender treatment protocols.

  • Prepares and administers medications under the supervision of a nurse or health care provider.

  • Provides patient/parent education, primarily discussing formal risk of laser surgery, as requested.

  • Performs ophthalmic studies including autorefraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field test,pachymetry, ophthalmic photography, and be able to establish a sterile field and assist with minor surgical procedures.

  • Performs ophthalmology services in the Refractive Laser Center. On occasion, when the Refractive Surgery Center patient workload permits, the Ophthalmology Technicians may be required to assist with day-to-day operations in 10th Medical Group Ophthalmology clinic.

  • Ensures all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.

  • Chaperones patients, when necessary, by escorting them to various offices or clinics located within the 10th Medical Group.

  • Provides patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.

  • Maintains a professional manner and displays a positive cooperative attitude.

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ophthalmology Technician shall have a minimum of a high school Diploma or GED Equivalent and 2-3 years’ experience in refractive surgery.

  • This individual shall be current in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the entire duration of the contract.

  • The Ophthalmology Technician must have at least 2-3 years’ experience, in the last 4 years as an ophthalmology assistant.

  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology to interpret departmental instructions/guidelines and to provide instructions.

  • Must be able to type 30 to 40 words per minute and be proficient with data entry into Microsoft Excel.

  • Shall be able to read, understand, speak, and write English well enough to communicate effectively.

  • Must follow site required health screening and immunization requirements.

  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Shall be trained and have the ability to use and maintain an autorefractor, phoropter, auto and manual keratometer, tonopen, Humphrey and Goldman visual field machine, corneal topographer, A-scan machine, pachymeter, specular microscope, ophthalmic photography equipment, slit lamp, potential acuity meter, brightness acuity test, color vision plates, stereo vision test, and personnel computers.

  • Has knowledge of patient medical records and maintains or assists with appropriate and accurate health record storage and retrieval systems.

  • Certification of an ophthalmic assistant from Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel program in Ophthalmology is preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities, and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients. Work is highly social with patients and can be stressful with a high emotional element. Decisions made may substantially impact patients and their families.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking, or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. May be assigned occasional to moderate periods of analytical tasks requiring extensive reasoning abilities. WORK SCHEDULE:

40 hours per week with occasional overtime and travel between on-site base clinics. The Health Care Provider (HCP) shall be available and required to work additional clinic hours as deemed necessary for adequate deliverable care of services.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS PACKAGE

  • Pay is: $24.50 to $29.07 per hour.
