Valley City State University Assistant Professor for English, Full-Time, Tenure Track in Valley City, North Dakota

Position Description

Valley City State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track English faculty position in the Language and Literature Department to begin August 2025.

The primary responsibility of this position is to teach a minimum of 12 credits per semester of undergraduate and graduate courses that fulfill writing and humanities requirements in the General Education program; early British literature, Shakespeare, and English language, linguistics, and grammar studies in the undergraduate English programs; and English language, linguistics, and early British literature studies in the graduate master programs.

The candidate selected will be expected to teach both online and face-to-face, maintain and update content and instructional activities as needed, contribute to scholarly pursuits in the discipline, participate in professional development, attend regularly scheduled faculty and department meetings, serve on campus committees, and provide appropriate service to the department and university. The candidate must have the ability to work with others in a collegial and collaborative manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching writing and humanities courses in the General Education program
  • Teaching early British literature, Shakespeare, and English language, linguistics, and grammar in the undergraduate English and English Education programs
  • Teaching English language, linguistics, and early British literature in the graduate programs
  • Staying current with course content and trends in teaching methods to improve student learning and student engagement
  • Staying current in and contributing to the discipline
  • Supporting department and university initiatives
  • Recruiting, retaining, and advising majors, minors, and graduate students inEnglish programs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English or a related fieldORall but dissertation (ABD) with commitment to degree completion
  • Higher Education undergraduate classroom teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in English with emphasis in early British literature including Shakespeare and specialization in English language, linguistics, and grammar
  • Graduate level teaching experience
  • Experience teaching with an online Learning Management System (LMS) such as Blackboard or Moodle
  • Experience and Demonstrated proficiency using technology in the classroom and online environments
  • Experience recruiting and advising students

Compensation

The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications and typically ranges from $47,000 to $52,000 for an Assistant Professor rank. This position is a 9-month, full-time position.In some cases, summer duties may be arranged through an additional contract.
