Director of Nursing Location: Moab, UT Duration: Fulltime Shift Information: 40 hours/week, shifts can be flexible Description: Director Of Nursing - Permanent The Director of Nursing (DON) at Client leads and oversees all aspects of nursing care, ensuring adherence to regulations and best practices. This leadership fosters a skilled and motivated nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, NAs, MAs) who deliver high-quality patient care aligned with the hospital's Mission, Vision, Values and Pillars. The DON achieves this through strategic direction, staff development, financial management, quality improvement initiatives, regulatory compliance training, and advocating for nurses. Outline of Duties: Strategic Leadership & Staff Development: Champion integration of Strategic Plan pillars into nursing operations. Foster evidence-based decision-making for policies, initiatives, and departmental goals. Collaborate with leadership to cultivate a work environment that attracts, retains, and educates nurses, promoting a highly skilled and dedicated staff. Partner with physicians and other departments to establish clear communication for a unified patient care experience. Nursing Management & Support: Provide ongoing leadership and guidance to Nurse Managers across all units, encompassing immediate needs, long-term planning, and tackling departmental challenges. Conduct regular rounds with Nurse Managers to discuss performance, identify challenges, and ensure alignment with strategic goals. Educate and guide Nurse Managers and staff on evidence-based decision-making for policies, patient care initiatives, and clinical pathway development. Collaborate with Nurse Managers on schedules, time-off requests, payroll, orientation, competency development, and oversight. Partner with HR on staffing strategies and ensure appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios. Assist Nurse Managers with employee counseling and progressive discipline plans. Provide temporary leadership during vacancies or absences. Participate in performance evaluations (may be delegated). Financial Oversight & Resource Management: Work with HR and CFO to develop competitive wage strategies. Develop and oversee nursing department budgets (capital and operational), including monitoring expenditures, managing education approvals, and ensuring efficient resource allocation. Develop schedules that optimize staffing for all units, including ensuring adequate Nursing Administrator-on-Call coverage. Quality Improvement & Patient Care: Oversee development, implementation, and maintenance of nursing policies and procedures that comply with federal regulations and state guidelines. Foster a culture of evidence-based practice by developing and maintaining protocols that adhere to healthcare best practices. Champion ongoing education of the nursing staff to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and values for holistic patient care. Lead and support process improvement initiatives, including data analysis, implementing new strategies, and monitoring performance metrics (HCAHPS, core measures). Monitor and analyze Press-Ganey survey results and implement interventions to improve patient satisfaction. Collaborate with CSS on patient complaints and oversee the complaint process during CSS staff absence. Partner with nursing departments, CSS, and others to develop educational initiatives that improve quality care, staff satisfaction, and well-being. Partner with the Trauma Medical Director and Program Director to ensure quality care and compliance with trauma program standards. Participate in ICS drills and scenarios, serving as "Operations Chief" when designated. Collaborate with IT to address nursing-related EMR issues. Oversee nurse participation in CMS and complaint surveys. Regulatory Compliance & Education: Ensure adherence to all applicable federal and state regulations, professional organization standards, and institutional policies and procedures. Participate in the review, development, and approval of nursing-related policies and procedures. Ensure all nurses complete required regulatory training. Oversee and provide guidance to the Utah State University - Client Nursing Program, including student orientation and curriculum review. Work collaboratively with clinical faculty to ensure effective clinical rotations for nursing students. Oversee updates to the Nursing Administrator-on-Call manual. Lead the development and execution of Nursing Skills Days programs. Representation & Advocacy: Participate actively in meetings to advocate for nurses and ensure their voices are heard in shaping patient care models. Oversee nursing-related committees (Clinical Ladder, On-Call, Utah State University - Client Nursing Program). Coordinate Nurses' Week celebrations with Nurse Managers. Acknowledge and celebrate achievements of individual nurses. Additional Responsibilities: Be prepared to take on occasional direct patient care duties as needed. Demonstrate willingness to fulfill other responsibilities assigned that contribute to the overall success of the nursing department. Minimum Qualifications: Active, unencumbered RN license in the State of Utah or compact state. Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Master’s degree, preferred. Minimum 3-5 years general nursing experience. Current BLS upon hire. Current ACLS, or obtain within 6 months of hire. Current NRP, PALS, STABLE, or obtain within12 months of hire. Prior experience and high level of comfort with electronic health records. Prior supervisory experience and/or leadership roles in a medical setting. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective listening skills. High level of comfort with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. Ability to work effectively independently as well as in a group.
