Description

The City of Fairfield Parks & Recreation Department engages the community in programs, facilities, and services that foster active and healthy lifestyles, support positive social interaction, and enhance our community's quality of life. Facility Attendants play a key role in this mission by performing a variety of duties in support to the users of various indoor and outdoor City facilities.

Under general supervision, the Facility Attendant will oversee programs and rental activities. This includes opening and closing buildings, monitoring facility uses including facility and guest safety during rentals, setting up tables and chairs for rentals, City programs and events, performing light janitorial and custodial duties, ensuring compliance of established rules and procedures for the use of facilities, and performing other duties as required.

Facility Attendants are very important for the overall facility user experience and a key member of the team that creates an outstanding event or program.

Please Note: Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is assigned at both indoor and outdoor facilities, and may include exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals, and some noise. The successful candidate must be able to work variable hours, including mornings, late evenings, holidays, and weekends.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Light to moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds); pushing; pulling; crawling; climbing; and prolonged periods of standing. Lifting above the shoulders, working off a ladder, manual dexterity, and good vision and hearing are also required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Under general supervision from a Parks & Recreation Facilities Worker or Parks & Recreation Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade is required.

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Equivalent to one year experience as a facility monitor, janitor, custodian, attendant, or manager in the hospitality industry, recreation field, or other similar position that requires close interaction with the public and would provide relevant experience necessary for successful performance as a Facility Attendant. Prior experience in dealing with the public effectively is desirable.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:

A valid California Driver's License is required at time of appointment.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Open and close facilities as scheduled for uses.

  • Work with and assist the public, renters, sports organizations, and other groups who use City facilities throughout the schedules use and event.

  • Provide assistance and information to facility users.

  • Oversee facility use activities including appropriate safety and security.

  • Assist in the inventory of facility supplies and equipment.

  • Meeting and greeting scheduled users upon arrival to the facility.

  • Informing facility users of City policies and procedures pertaining to their use and insuring that users are in compliance.

  • Provide information to guests, or refer guests to the appropriate Department contact.

  • Resolve guess questions and complaints.

  • Maintain professional, courteous behavior toward co-workers, members of the public, and all other contacts in the course of work.

  • Perform basic and minor custodial and janitorial duties during and after scheduled uses and activities.

  • Documenting and reporting necessary repairs and incidents to the supervisor.

  • Move and arrange tables and chairs and equipment for the set-up of facilities at various locations for different programs, uses, or events.

  • Assist in organizing and implementing tasks for programs, uses, and special events.

  • Set-up and operate audio, video or other technology focused equipment for programs, uses, and events.

  • Assist in ensuring proper compliance of established facility rules and regulations by participants and users.

  • Return tables and chairs and equipment to original location following events.

  • Secure all locks and doors and set alarm when closing facilities.

  • Perform basic outside field maintenance.

  • Operate basic field preparation vehicles and equipment.

  • Prepare sports fields for games and tournaments including set up bases, drag and water fields, clean dugouts, and turn off/on lights.

  • Maintain proper pool water chemistry and water cleanliness.

  • Perform facility inspections to ensure safety and cleanliness including basic pool feature safety inspections.

  • Must be available and flexible to work nights/weekends/holidays as needed.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Safe work practices.

  • Materials and equipment used in public facilities (i.e. custodial products, commercial furniture).

    Ability to:

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Work independently or as a team.

  • Exercise sound judgement.

  • Communicate effectively with and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and members of the public.

  • Work independently in the absence of a supervisor and prioritize work assignments.

  • Read diagrams for daily setups.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

Depending upon the number of applications received, the examination may consist of an application screening, written and/or practical exam, oral interview, or any combination. This position requires a local records check and response to a medical questionnaire prior to appointment. A pre-employment medical exam may also be required.
