Emergency Department - Emergency Department Technician PRN

  • 30-bed Emergency Care Unit

  • Rapid paced, high acuity unit with 155 visits per day; >55,000 annual visits

  • ACLS, PALS, and EKG provided

  • An orientation program facilitated by a Clinical Educator, focused on Emergency Nursing especially for the novice nurse

  • PRN - will need to work a min of 24 hours off shift per 6 week schedule

  • 12-hour day/evening/night

  • Weekend and Holiday as needed

  • Shift and Weekend Differential Eligibility

Position Function: The Emergency Department Technician is under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, Clinical Manager, or at the direction of a physician. Performs clerical, computer, phlebotomy, EKG, and other patient care duties in the Emergency Department.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Job Class Specifics

  1. Assist physician in patient examinations and specific ED procedures.

  2. Performs weekly checks of eyewash station as assigned.

  3. Assists in order entry and clerical duties as needed.

  4. Completely and accurately documents all patient interventions and interactions on PCR.

  5. Recognizes and responds to priorities in the patient care process. Readily adapts to changes in workload and responds efficiently.

  6. Answers and responds to patient call lights promptly.

  7. Accurately performs phlebotomy duties on all age/population groups and processes specimens to assure proper handling, labeling, and EDM documentation.

  8. Performs treatments, procedures, collects and records patient data under the direction of the RN with attention to detail, accuracy, and patient comfort and safety. Keeps RN informed of findings.

  9. Interprets patients EKG rhythm.

  10. Communicates in a timely manner any aberrancies or arrhythmias to the primary RN and/or Resource Nurse, recognizing the significance of the interpretation and need for appropriate intervention.

  11. Ensures alarms are on and properly set at all times.

  12. Responds appropriately to emergent rhythms.

  13. Completes rhythm competencies as required and by due date.

  14. Receives, places and transfers telephone calls using appropriate telephone etiquette while promoting positive customer service.

  15. Advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring attention or follow-up.

  16. Readily adapts to changes in workload. Prioritizes work.

  17. Maintains patient assignment boards, trackers, and Responder 5 applications.

  18. Transports medications within the hospital as requested and needed according to Hospital policy.

Department Specifics

  1. Accurately applies orthopedic splints and dressings with associated patient/family teaching as directed.

  2. Discontinues IV site at direction of Nursing Staff and accurately documents in EDM.

  3. Assists with post mortem care.

  4. Assists nursing staff in preparing for emergency transfer to cath lab or OR.

  5. Able to verbalize and demonstrate eye irrigation as assigned.

  6. Properly performs glucometer testing.

  7. Independently restocks inventory of all work areas each shift as needed.

  8. Able to verbalize and demonstrate correct procedure for cleaning of specialty ED equipment.

  9. Accurately completes and transmits 12 lead EKG's.

  10. Demonstrates proper application of restraints in the ED setting.

  11. Completes mandatory education and inservices by due date.

Qualifications and Standards

Education: Formal Education and Training: At least one of the following three or the equivalent in relative experience is required: (1) graduate of an accredited medical assistant program; or (2) graduate of an accredited phlebotomy program with 6 months of experience; or (3) 2 years of acute hospital CNA experience. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology is required. Successful completion of EKG class with minimum score of 80% required within 6 months of hire.

Experience: Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required. Proficiency in Phlebotomy preferred; proficiency in EKG preferred; experience in reading cardiac rhythms preferred; basic computer literacy and typing skill preferred.

Certifications/Licensure: CPR certification required.
