Science Systems and Applications, Inc. Communication Intern- VASFA Space Adventure Camp in Wallops Island, Virginia

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking a motivated Communications Intern to "tell the story" of Virginia Space Flight Academy's (VASFA) Space Adventure camp. Step into the world of innovation with a Communications Internship at the Virginia Space Flight Academy’s Space Adventure Camp, nestled within the prestigious NASA Wallops Flight Facility. Your mission? To tell the story of VASFA’s Space Camp and its campers through communication and storytelling in the realm of aerospace through cutting-edge media techniques and captivating content creation. As a Communication Intern, you'll dive into a dynamic role where creativity meets strategy. You'll have the opportunity to craft compelling stories, produce engaging multimedia content, and capture the camper’s excitement of space exploration. Your tasks will range from assisting with media planning and execution to ensuring the seamless integration of our message across various platforms. This internship isn't just about gaining experience; it's a launchpad for your career in media and communications. Key Responsibilities:

  • Content Creation: Assist in creating engaging and informative content for various communication channels, including website articles, social media posts, press releases, and newsletters.

  • Social Media Coordination: Create, compile and assist with publishing content for VAFSA’s social media profiles, including keeping the profiles relevant, monitoring engagement, and analyzing social media performance. Assist in developing/adapting the social media strategy for VASFA.

  • Video Design: Create weekly graduation videos from media gathered and supplemented by camp staff. The graduation video should encapsulate the essence of our camp experience, celebrating the campers' journey, growth, and achievements.

  • Media Relations: Support the Executive Director in building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets, including drafting press releases and media pitches.

  • Graphic Design: Collaborate with our team to capture content needed to create visually appealing graphics and infographics to accompany written content.

  • Audience Engagement: Engage with our online community, responding to comments, messages, and inquiries in a professional and informative manner.

  • Analytics and Reporting: Monitor and analyze the performance of communication efforts using analytics tools, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.

  • General Camp Operations Support: In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, this position may be required to perform a variety of other duties as assigned by camp leadership.

These duties may include but are not limited to providing support to team members and assisting with day-to-day operational tasks to ensure the smooth functioning of camp activities. The Communications Intern is expected to approach these tasks with flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to maintaining the overall success of the camp program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s program in communications, marketing, journalism, science communication or a related field.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail

  • Passion for science and technology with an ability to translate complex scientific concepts into accessible language for a general audience.

  • Proficiency in social media and website platforms and content management systems.

  • Basic graphic design skills

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.

  • Self-motivated, creative and able to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Display maturity of judgment and behavior. •

  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment in hot/humid conditions. •

  • Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours. •

  • US Citizenship required. •

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Must be able to pass a NASA and criminal background investigation.

  • Must pass drug and alcohol screen.

  • Work full-time during the summer camp season

  • Maintain appropriate interpersonal and personal boundaries.

  • Adheres to VASFA safety protocols and requirements.

  • Upholds in a highly professional manner.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

  • Photography skills

  • Video editing experience

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
