Summary of Position Duties

The Plant Health Physicist is responsible for:

  • Monitoring all aspects of the Health Physics program and performance indicators to include:

  • ALARA program

  • outage preparation and execution

  • radioactive waste management

  • shipping of radioactive waste/material

  • Process Control Program

  • Implementing special projects to improve Radiation Protection

  • Tracking/Trending all radiological data related to plant performance indicators.

  • Benchmarking industry on Radiation Protection issues and site performance

  • Providing technical support for the Radiation Protection department, including assessments of internal dose/whole body counting, skin dose and shielding; compliance with all regulatory requirements

  • Substituting as Radiation Protection Manager as required - qualification as per ANSI 3.1 - 1993

  • Ensuring that ALARA committee meetings are held, preparing agenda and tracking actions.

  • Maintaining the ALARA suggestion program

  • Serving as an on-call RP Supervisor as needed.

  • Filling the Emergency Response Organization positions as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Health Physics, Chemistry or other physical science preferred. Nuclear Navy training certification or equivalent is also preferred.

  • Advanced degree or American Academy of Health Physics Certified Health Physicist certification is highly desired.

Background/Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in nuclear power plant Health Physics or Radiation Protection programs is required

  • ANSI certification as a Health Physics / Radiation Protection Technician is desired

  • Experience with nuclear power plant outages, access control and ALARA is desired

  • Experience with radwaste management and shipping is a plus

  • Experience with project management including budgeting and scheduling is desired

  • Applicant must be able to obtain an unescorted badge at all SNC sites

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases are desired

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills are required. Strong presentation skills are required

  • Strong ability to make decisions and drive behaviors is required

  • Strong working knowledge of nuclear power plant systems, processes, and procedures and clear understanding of and ability to apply regulatory requirements to plant settings are desired

  • Strong interpersonal skills are required

  • Ability to balance multiple objectives and set priorities is required

  • Ability to problem solve and seek alternative solutions to complex issues are needed
