Mates are responsible for managing the deck crew and deck level responsibilities under the direction of the vessel captain. Mates are required to follow and promote the policies, procedures and regulations of the CTC Responsible Carrier Program, United States Coast Guard, Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA), and Ship Inspection Report Program (SIRE). 

This position would serve as an additional step in promoting future Captains, Engineers, Mates and Managers through teaching responsibility and accountability. This position will not relieve the captain of any of his duties, responsibilities or accountabilities but would greatly assist him in making sure the vessel and crew were functioning at the safest and most cost-efficient capacity possible.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage all deck level responsibilities under the direction of the captain. 
  • Train entry level new hires for stern deckhand responsibilities; train stern deckhands to advance into lead deckhand positions. 
  • Responsible for training and supervising junior personnel in, hands on training, programs including policies, procedures, safety and security, and maintenance of deck rigging/machinery.
  • Oversee the deckhand web-based training is completed and assist crew if needed.
  • Participate and assist captain with onboard safety training, meetings and drills as directed by the captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding, and medical emergencies.
  • Participate in shoreside training as required.
  • Ensure Stop Take 5 books are being utilized, along with Safe Work Instructions and safety procedures, by all deck personnel; Record and report any safety issues to the captain.
  • Manage the rigging inventory book; order supplies as needed. 
  • Ensure rigging/winch repairs are being reported and completed on time.
  • Maintain safety equipment and deck machinery aboard the vessel.
  • Assist the Captain with vessel security and deck seamanship.
  • Manage the grocery inventories, complete store orders, and oversee the perishable inventory. 
  • Under the Captains direction, perform routine inspections throughout the vessel; report and record findings.
  • Maintain familiarity with all duties under the company Towing Safety Management System (TSMS) including Emergency Response Activities.
  • Follow and promote all of CTC's safety policies and procedures.
  • Stay up to date on assigned training in the Learning Management System (LMS); attend CTC annual engineer/deck training sessions.
  • Responsible for maintaining personal hygiene, ensuring the cleanliness and safety of own bunkroom, and collaborating with the crew to uphold similar standards in public spaces.
  • Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard and duties as assigned on the Station Bill.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of three years of experience on a towing vessel.
  • Must be qualified as a Lead deckhand and have at least two letters of recommendation from previous supervisors with contact information.
  • Ability to collaborate, effectively manage and work well with others. 
  • Strong time management skills, able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to clearly follow instructions, both written and verbal.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test and submit to random DOT testing requirements.
  • Pass pre-employment physical.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Prior experience in a similar position within the industry
